Large Snapdragon - לוע־ארי גדול
לוע־ארי גדול (Antirrhinum majus תת־מין tortuosum) הוא צמח בר גבוה ובולט, המוסיף כתמי צבע לנופים הסלעיים של ישראל. לצמח גבעולים זקופים שלאורכם ערוכים עלים צרים וירוקים, מעט דביקים למגע. באביב הוא מצמיח פרחים גדולים ורבים, בעלי צורה אופיינית של לוע־ארי, שצבעם יכול להיות ורוד, סגול, צהוב או לבן, ולעיתים עם כתמים או דגמים מנוגדים באזור ה“פה” של הפרח. כאשר לוחצים בעדינות על צידי הפרח, הוא נפתח ונסגר, תכונה שהעניקה לו את שמו המוכר.
בישראל גדל לוע־ארי גדול בעיקר במדרונות סלעיים, על קירות אבן, מצוקים ובאזורים מופרעים, במיוחד בתחום הים־תיכוני, ובהם הגליל, הכרמל והרי יהודה. הוא מעדיף מקומות שטופי שמש וקרקעות מנוקזות היטב, ופורח לרוב בין מרץ למאי. דבורים הן המאביקות העיקריות, והן נדחקות אל תוך הפרחים כדי להגיע לצוף. עם בוא חום הקיץ הצמח מתייבש, לאחר שייצר זרעים קטנים רבים. צבעיו הבוהקים ויכולתו לגדול בסדקים ובקרקעות דלות הופכים את לוע־הארי הגדול למראה שמח ומוכר בנוף האביבי.
Large snapdragon (*Antirrhinum majus* subsp. *tortuosum*) is a tall, showy wildflower that brings splashes of color to Israel’s rocky landscapes. It has upright stems with narrow, slightly sticky green leaves arranged along them. In spring, the plant produces many large, snapdragon-shaped flowers that can be pink, purple, yellow, or white, often with contrasting markings on the “mouth” of the flower. When gently squeezed from the sides, the flower opens and closes, giving rise to its familiar name.
In Israel, large snapdragon grows mainly on rocky slopes, stone walls, cliffs, and disturbed areas, especially in the Mediterranean region, including the Galilee, Carmel, and Judean Hills. It prefers sunny places and well-drained soils and flowers from March to May. Bees are the main pollinators, pushing their way into the flowers to reach nectar. As summer heat sets in, the plant dries out after producing many small seeds. Its bright colors and ability to grow in cracks and poor soils make large snapdragon a cheerful and familiar sight in the spring countryside.
Olive Tree - עץ זית אירופאי
עץ הזית (Olea europaea) הוא עץ ירוק־עד מאריך ימים, בעל מראה ירוק־כסוף ייחודי. עליו צרים וקשים, ירוקים כהים בצדם העליון וכסופים־בהירים בצדם התחתון, תכונה המסייעת לו להתמודד עם קרינת שמש חזקה ותנאי יובש. הגזע לרוב עבה, מפותל ומחורץ לעומק, במיוחד בעצים ותיקים, ומקנה לעצי הזית את מראם העתיק והמוכר. באביב מופיעים פרחים קטנים בצבע לבן־קרמי, הערוכים באשכולות רופפים, אשר מתפתחים בהמשך לזיתים המשנים את צבעם מירוק לסגול־שחור עם הבשלתם.
בישראל מהווה עץ הזית מרכיב מרכזי ומגדיר של הנוף הים־תיכוני, וגדל הן כעץ בר והן כעץ תרבות ברחבי הגליל, הכרמל, הרי יהודה ואזורי החוף. הוא משגשג במדרונות סלעיים ובקרקעות מנוקזות היטב, ועמיד במיוחד לחום וליובש. הזית מתורבת באזור זה אלפי שנים לצורך הפקת שמן ופרי, והשפעתו ניכרת בחקלאות, במטבח ובתרבות המקומית. בזכות עמידותו, אריכות ימיו ושורשיו ההיסטוריים העמוקים, עץ הזית הוא אחד העצים האיקוניים והמזוהים ביותר בישראל.
The Olive Tree, Olea europaea, is a long-lived evergreen tree with a distinctive silvery-green appearance. It has narrow, leathery leaves that are dark green on top and pale silver underneath, helping the tree cope with strong sun and dry conditions. The trunk is often thick, twisted, and deeply furrowed, especially in older trees, giving olives their well-known ancient character. In spring, the tree produces small, creamy-white flowers in loose clusters, which later develop into olives that change from green to purple-black as they ripen.
In Israel, the olive tree is a defining element of the Mediterranean landscape, growing both wild and cultivated throughout the Galilee, Carmel, Judean Hills, and coastal regions. It thrives on rocky hillsides and well-drained soils and is extremely tolerant of drought and heat. Because of its resilience, longevity, and deep historical roots, the olive tree is one of the most iconic trees in Israel.
